Absolutely agree — I had the same issue and got it working by reconfiguring the hub. Took me a while to locate that parameter.
MQTTMaster: I've been using this for several years and it's been pretty solid. The notifications work well if you configure correctly.

Honestly, I'd choose Home Assistant over Smartthings for flexibility. Keep in mind the tradeoff.
